The wedding veil has various symbolisms. There are different legends associated with the wedding veil. Infact, each type of veil a bride uses has a special significance; For example, the use of a cathedral style veil is only allowed in weddings that take place in a cathedral. Judaism, christianity, medieval traditions and arranged marriages contribute different significances to the veil.

Matrimonios concertados / Arranged Marriages

In antiquity, arranged marriages used the veil to assure that the groom went ahead with the wedding. The marriage was arranged by the father of the groom and the father of the bride and it is believed ,in some cases, the groom did not accept the bride if he found her unattractive. The veil over the face of the bride served to keep him committed. Some cultures also obliged the bride to use a veil in arranged marriages as a symbol of sumission and obedience to the groom

Tradiciones medievales/Medieval Traditions

According to medieval traditions , the veil was used to protect the bride from bad spirits. They believed the happiness of the bride attracted these spirits. The veil symbolized the purity and modesty and was used to confound the spirits. The veil covers the traits of the bride and she could be happily married.

Judaísmo y cristianismo/ Judaism and christianity

Judaism and Christianity are western religions that value the virginity of the bride. She should wear a long veil that covers her face completely as a symbol of the protection of her modesty. At the end of the ceremony , in either of the two religions, the groom raises up the veil as a symbol of his being the first person who will have sexual relations with the bride. Furthermore, the veil is a symbol of her interior beauty. The tradition indicates that in the marriage the bride should use the veil as a symbol that beauty may disappear but love is eternal.

Actualidad/Actuality

At present in the west, the veil is not used to cover the face as purity is not so important. It is known that many couples have sexual relations before marriage and for this reason the veil can be placed over the hair and not on the face. However, if you want to conserve the symbolism of virginity tha the veil has, you can use it over your face and move it during one of the most important moments of the wedding. At the beginning of the ceremony, the father of the bride can raise the veil as a symbol that he gives his daughter to her groom or the groom can can lift it up when he is about to kiss the bride as a symbol of the completion of their marriage ceremony.
