Boda Civil ¿Ayuntamiento o Juzgado?/ CIVIL WEDDING: CITY COUNCIL OR COURT?

You know that in this blog we always talk about everything related to the bridal world, which is a big deal! Trends, fashions, new ideas and some of our weddings to keep you up to date. We try to approach the «beautiful» and the most beautiful part of the wedding and what it entails to organize them, but there is also another part. The required paperwork to validate a marriage and the various visits to the Civil Registry, as well as the filling of the documentation are clearly a burden. So here we go! Today we will talk about Civil Weddings.

The majority of civil weddings are celebrated either in the Town Hall of the town where the couple reside, or in the court. Both ways are valid, but the procedures are different. Today we are collecting the details of each of the options so you will have something clearer when choosing.

In both places, you have to start the marriage by filling in the Civil Registry of your locality, for which you have to submit the following documentation.

Your birth certificates. You can request them online.

Your National Identity Document, NIE or Passport

Certificate of residence

In case both of you are divorced, the previous marriage certificate

In case both of you are a widower, the marriage certificate and the death certificate of the previous partner.

Once you have all the necessary documentation, you have to go to the Civil Registry with your respective witnesses and a judge, then you will start the marriage procedure.

You will have to come again to get the marriage certificate, and from there, you will choose the date either in the City Hall or in the Court. Keep in mind that the marriage certificate is valid for a year, so if you do not get married within that time, you will have to repeat the procedure.

Marriage in court

If you decide to get married at court, on the day you collect the marriage certificate you can choose a date. Bear in mind that you can not always get the one you wish, so you’ d better have a look in time! Remember that in the court weddings are held only from Monday to Friday and in the morning.

On the other hand, weddings at the court are free, so you will not have to pay any fees. You must only attend the day chosen with your respective witnesses (always with ID and photocopy). Once the «ceremony» is celebrated, you should not worry about the inscription of the marriage, as they will have already done it, as well as the delivery of your family book.

Marriage at the City Hall

The availability in the Town Hall depends on the Mayor or Councilors, so Fridays and Saturdays are usually booked in advance.

In the City Hall the procedure is not free, and you will need to pay a fee to start the procedure. They usually cost between 70-90 euros if you are a resident of the town, and something more if you are not. That depends on each City Council.

On the other hand, usually they leave some detail in the wedding room , such as center or floral details, although we do not recommend it, because the ceremony takes 15-20 minutes.

Once married, it is the City Council itself which is responsible for registering the marriage in the Civil Registry, and once registered, you can go to pick up your Family Book by registering with a copy of the marriage certificate that you have signed on the wedding day.

From there on, you will just have to leave and enjoy your married life! 😉
